Webinar: Climate resilience across the renewable energy sector
Yesterday, Sust Global CEO Josh Gilbert presented some of our cutting edge R&D with UKSA and Equitix at an IPFA webinar on climate resilience across the renewable energy sector.
Here is a summary of what Josh discussed in the session:
He addressed the need for infrastructure investors to use forward-looking climate models due to the significant and non-intuitive changes in wind resource patterns coming over the coming decades. High-quality, site-specific data in particular is necessary due to the non-uniform nature of wind pattern changes, with some sites expected to become more productive and others to become less productive.
He also highlighted why existing climate models are insufficient for solving this issue due to their low resolution and model bias.
He introduced our Geospatial AI approach to eliminate bias and enhance resolution by training machine learning models with satellite-derived observational data and historic site performance data (which can be seen in the third image attached to this post). The high-resolution and bias-free models allow us to create site-level wind generation projections that help investors mitigate risks and capture opportunities that climate change will present to wind projects around the world.
Additionally, our partnership with Equitix (see partnership announcement here) has allowed us to dive deep into understanding infrastructure investing workflows. As a result, we can create outputs that are useful in the day-to-day processes for their investment and asset management professionals allowing them to make climate-informed decisions across their organization.
It was also great to hear a broader view from Mott MacDonald and how they are proactively addressing climate risks. Changes in renewables energy resources and increases in acute hazard incidence are important challenges to navigate in order to protect investor returns and build more resilient energy grids, and it’s great to have partners committed to building solutions.
